Sam joined the firm in January of 2007 and became a member in 2010. His practice focuses on litigation at the trial court and appellate levels and he also handles real estate matters. Sam has advocated successfully for clients in Vermont Superior, District, Family and Environmental Courts, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, and the Vermont Supreme Court where he has won several appeals. He is a skilled litigator with a reputation for honesty and fairness. Sam has presided as an Acting Judge in the Family Division of the Windham Superior Court.
From 1997 through the end of 2006 Sam practiced at Fitts, Olson & Giddings where he became a member in 2000. Before moving to Vermont, he practiced in Poughkeepsie, New York, concentrating in tax appeal work. Sam has also worked for the Washington, D.C. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. and for an energy consortium in the Czech Republic. Sam has a Master of Science Degree, which gives him a strategic advantage in working with scientific experts.
Sam currently serves on the Board of Directors and is Secretary of the Stone Trust, a Vermont non-profit whose mission is to preserve and advance the art and craft of dry stone walling. Previously, Sam served on the Board of Directors and was President of the In-Sight Photography Project, Inc., a Vermont nonprofit serving Brattleboro area teens.
Sam grew up in the Hudson Valley of New York and attended high school and law school in Vermont. As an athlete, Sam has participated in the National Championships of Ultimate Frisbee in the College, Open, and Masters Divisions. He lives in Brattleboro with his wife and two daughters. Sam enjoys white water canoeing, fly fishing, camping, diving, and gardening.
